This wayfinding and station identification sign program was developed for the new San Mateo CalTrain station, located on the heavily traveled San Francisco-South Bay commuter rail line. The design challenge involved developing a station graphics program that would conform to CalTrain standards and provide enhanced user safety and accessibility while complementing the new station's historically influenced architectural design. The design team worked closely with the project architect to develop signage colors, details and mounting locations that integrated seamlessly with the architectural palette and program.

Jury Comment

"The materials and colors blend seamlessly with the architecture, streetscapes, and landscape. The circular element, color, and typeface are welcoming, friendly, and easy-to-read. The directional elements are clean, crisp, and harmonious."

"This is an extremely respectful integration with the existing structure."
