Boston Chapter Event: Street Seats Tour with Design Museum Boston
Meet at Boston Children’s Museum, Milk Bottle
308 Congress St Boston, MA 02210
In September 2012 Design Museum Boston invited individuals and teams from around the world to design an iconic bench or 'street seat' for the Fort Point Channel in South Boston's up and coming Innovation District. The goal of the challenge is to improve the livability of this burgeoning urban area, using design, while being socially and environmentally conscious.
They received over 170 entries from all over the world - 23 countries in all were represented. The judges selected 20 semi-finalists that best met the design criteria including: innovation, durability, sustainability, aesthetics, and comfort. The winning entries were inspired by the rich history of the Fort Point community and the possibilities of Boston's Innovation District. The semi-finalists receive a grant from Design Museum Boston and the Street Seats sponsors to fabricate their full-scale bench for an outdoor design exhibition and walking tour around the Channel. More info at: http://designmuseumboston.org/exhibits/streetseats/
For this event: We'll meet at the iconic Milk Bottle outside Boston Children's Museum (accessible via Red and Silver Lines) for a tour of the Street Seats benches installed around Fort Point Channel. Afterwards, we'll head to a local establishment for refreshments / conversation.
5:00 pm - meet and greet
5:15 pm - tour with Design Museum Boston

Boston Chapter Event: Summer Charrette
4:00 PM to 7:00 PM (EDT)
Design Museum Boston HQ
12 Channel Street
Floor 2
Design Museum Boston and the Society for Environmental Graphic Design proudly present Summer Charrette. This is your chance to get off the grid, meet other designers and get your creative juices flowing.
How it works: Participants will be assigned a team at the beginning of the event. You'll have a chance to check out the space and mingle a bit before getting down to business. Each team will be given a station to brainstorm and build conceptual models. Tools and materials will be provided but feel free to bring surplus materials to share.
The challenge: Transform the second floor of 12 Channel Street from blank canvas into creative workspace. The second floor of 12 Channel Street is currently open layout industrial space with little to no indication when you walk off the elevator that anything creative is going on. Help envision how to create a sense of place for the floor and transform it into flexible workspace for young creatives.
Perks: Snacks provided. Beer donated by Harpoon Brewery. Materials donated by Seaport Graphics and Design Communications, LTD.
The process and results of this charrette will be featured on the Design Museum Boston site. The winning team's creation will be featured in EG Magazine. Models will be on exhibit at 12 Channel Street.
Free for SEGD and DBM members, $10 for non-members.
