Approved for 1 AIA Learning Unit

Urban projects--cities, towns, college campuses, and academic medical centers--have the same need for identification and wayfinding as their suburban counterparts, but they face unique physical problems (severely limited space, site conflicts, etc.) as well as administrative ones (regulations, large stakeholder groups).

Excellent design is not possible without a process that addresses the complex issues of urban projects. Webinar leader Virginia Gehshan, FSEGD, principal of Cloud Gehshan Associates (Philadelphia), will focus on her firm's unique planning and design process, which includes environmental psychology, user-based wayfinding, and testing. She will alsoreview some of the "front-end" challenges such as stakeholder group management, consensus building, nomenclature decisions, and designing for cities and campuses within the new MUTCD guidelines.

Projects cited in the webinar will include The University of Chicago, The University of Texas at Austin, Ohio State University, Columbia University, and the University of Arkansas.

Virginia Gehshan and her partner Jerome Cloud work with a variety of clients in the areas of placebranding, architectural signage, and wayfinding. Their urban and campus projects include The University of Chicago, Arizona State University, Ohio State University, Franklin & Marshall, Wesleyan University, and University of Arkansas.
