Kent State University/SEGD Summer Program

Kent State University
Kent, Ohio

Held on the Kent State University campus, the annual Kent State/SEGD Summer Workshop provides a structured, high-level immersion in environmental graphic design. For EGD students, early-career designers practicing EGD, and designers from other disciplines who may wish to explore EGD as a career path, it provides a unique and focused opportunity to explore the discipline through the lens of real-world clients and guidance from leading EGD practitioners.

The intensive two-week program follows a prescribed process of problem solving and documentation. The course is facilitated by workshop founder David Middleton, a leading EGD educator and associate professor of Visual Communication Design at Kent State University. Internationally recognized EGD practitioners and industry professionals lead specific program components. Past visiting instructors have included Lance Wyman (Lance Wyman Ltd.), Wayne Hunt (Hunt Design), David Gibson (Two Twelve), Virginia Gehshan (Cloud Gehshan Associates), Joel Katz (Joel Katz Design Associates), and many others.

Students and designers will study specific issues of analysis, strategy, planning, mapping, schematic design, design development, interpretive storytelling, and design-intent documentation. The study will result in the development of a comprehensive document of the overall conceptual design process.

The program represents 3 college credit hours.
