Executive Director-Society for Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD)


SEGD seeks a seasoned and dynamic Executive Director to lead the organization to new levels of growth, acceptance, influence and overall success.

 

SEGD Situation and Opportunity

SEGD is a non-profit membership organization serving the global community of individuals, companies and educators who work at the intersection of communication design and the built environment. SEGD is a stable, financially healthy organization of approximately 1500 individual and company members active in the varied disciplines of environmental graphic design, museum/exhibition design, wayfinding design branded environments and related design areas. The organization hosts an annual conference and expo, publishes a quarterly magazine and has ongoing initiatives in professional development, education, government relations and member support.

 

After twelve years of overseeing substantial growth, expanding influence and assembling an exceptional staff, SEGD's executive director will be retiring in late spring of 2010.

 

Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years senior leadership experience for a non-profit professional association or similar.
  • Demonstrated success in raising funds, building partnerships and financial management.
  • Familiarity with and passionate interest in design, including graphic design, architecture, landscape architecture, interior design or industrial design, especially interest in environmental graphic design, museum/exhibition design and wayfinding.
  • Bachelor's degree; Master's degree preferred.
  • SEGD prefers that the executive director be willing to live within commuting distance to the Washington DC headquarters.
Responsibilities
  • Plans, directs and oversees all policies, objectives, initiatives and staffing.
  • Manages development, promotion and all operations.
  • Ensures all activities support the focus of the SEGD charter and mission.
  • Develops and executes policies to maximize funding and develops goals and strategies for all fundraising initiatives.
  • Identifies and fosters relationships with business community, existing and prospective donors/sponsors.
  • Performs tasks related to fiscal solvency, staff development, organizational planning and strategy, and strengthening member relations.
  • Leads and directs the work of others.
  • Represents the organization in the design and governmental communities and serves as spokesperson.
  • Travel is required.
Reporting
  • The executive director reports to a board of directors made up of outstanding SEGD members. Board members serve three-year terms and are led by an executive committee.
Required Skills
  • Exemplary leadership skills including strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Able to manage day-to-day program execution
  • Knowledge of 501c3 regulations
  • Proficiency in relevant computer skills
