Design Master Class: Design as Interpretation:
Multi-Day Workshop
Themes: Exhibition Development and Design, Experience Design
July 14-16, 2008
University of the Arts
Philadelphia, PA
This Master Class is the American version of a hugely
successful program developed by Lee Skolnick, of Lee H. Skolnick
Architecture + Design Partnership, held last year at the University
of Leicester Department of Museum Studies in Leicester, England.
The Master Class is a short studio project for designers interested
in developing high-level interpretation skills through design. This
class is oriented around storytelling in the environment and the
various disciplines involved in interpretation from writing and
graphics to multimedia and lighting.
The focus will be a design charette. Participants
will work directly with Lee and his colleagues in groups on exhibit
“interventions” that explore the potential for interpreting
content and concepts through design, using locations within the
University campus as project sites. Audience definition, conceptual
framework, narrative, procession and circulation, design vocabulary,
materiality, interactivity, graphics, lighting, and media will be
examined through lectures, group discussions, and presentations,
in terms of their potential to contribute to truly interpretive
visitor experiences.
The course is intended for museum designers, educators,
and other museum professionals actively involved in exhibition development.
The class will include a high level of discussion and debate. Participation
is limited to twenty professionals and five design students.
The program will begin on Monday, July 14 at 5:00pm
and end on Wednesday, July 16 at 6:00pm.

Explore new directions in exhibition design, navigate
new design processes, experience dynamic discussions, and see cutting-edge
methodologies. This symposium responds to the unique needs of the
world of exhibition design and brand environments and is the premier
event for any designer, client, or fabricator involved in museums,
aquariums, zoos, heritage areas, trade shows, themed environments,
store environments, or corporate environments.
Exhibition designers come from a variety of fields
including architecture, graphic design, and industrial design. This
mix has created a revolution in the integration of architecture
and exhibition, making placemaking central to any narrative approach.
This symposium will focus on combining narrative and place using
a combination of design theory, design exercises, and discussion.
Topics will include integration of exhibition in the architectural
design process, exploration of narrative within spatial design,
and research and professional collaboration.
Corporate leaders, museum leaders, and exhibition
designers from around the country will join in provocative discussion
and design challenges; this symposium will change the way you look
at design.
Attendance is limited to 32 design professionals,
fabricators, design managers, and clients. Five students may attend;
student scholarships are available (contact craig@segd.org for more
